”A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
“Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’“
“All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.
When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth. Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”
Jesus replied, “What is impossible with men is possible with God.”
Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!”
“I tell you the truth,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God will fail to receive many times as much in this age and, in the age to come, eternal life.”
*The reason Jesus wanted to know why the rich man called Him good was because He wanted the rich man to know He was God in flesh. Notice Jesus did not say that the man needed to be perfect, get a temple recommend, and then perform the ordinances in the temple that Mormons say are necessary in order to be saved. In fact the rich man is already trying to show Jesus how perfect he was. But Jesus knew his heart and his love of money. Since Jesus wants to be the only god in our lives he will require that we rid ourselves of the love of any god, he tells the rich man he must sell everything and give to the poor. We must follow Jesus and His teachings alone. His teachings are not easy. We must forgive the unforgivable, love the unloveable, give when would rather be selfish, and even still we will not be able to do all that is required. Those who heard asked, who then can be saved? He is indicating that no one can, there is no one righteous, no not one. Romans 3:10. So it is only through Jesus that we are saved, not by works so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:9. With God all things are possible! Luke 18:27 What Jesus really wants you to do is trust Him. When He speaks to you through His Word, listen and obey. He alone will direct your path and bring you safely out of this world into His loving embrace.
